Understanding Person-Centred NDIS Supports

A practical guide to supports built around participant choice, dignity and goals.

Person-centred support starts with the participant’s goals, preferences, routines, culture and communication needs. It requires clear documentation, consistent support delivery and regular review.

Understanding Person-Centred NDIS Supports
Person-centred NDIS supports place the participant at the centre of every decision, service, and outcome. This approach recognises that each person has unique goals, preferences, strengths, culture, routines, and support needs. Rather than delivering a one-size-fits-all service, person-centred support focuses on choice, control, dignity, independence, and meaningful participation.

Under the NDIS, participants should be actively involved in planning how their supports are delivered. This includes choosing the services they receive, who provides them, when they are delivered, and how they align with their personal goals. Support workers and providers play an important role in listening, respecting participant decisions, promoting safety, and helping each person build capacity.

Person-centred support also involves working collaboratively with families, carers, advocates, and other professionals where appropriate. When delivered well, it helps participants live more independently, participate in their community, improve wellbeing, and achieve better long-term outcomes.
